What a great adventure, off the beaten path, not the usual activities…cheap costumed photos, hilarious comedy shows, safe seafood markets! I haven’t been to Cambodia so this was a fun read!
Jennifer Joslin says
Glad you enjoyed it, Carol! 🙂

I am guilty of not knowing that Cambodia had this much to offer, the feather outfit you wore was super cool. The incredibly cheap seafood and ice cream is a definite must for me too!
Jennifer Joslin says
You’re not alone! A lot of people don’t realize how much Phnom Penh has to offer. Yes, the seafood BBQ and ice cream is a must 🙂
Meg Jerrard says
It was a great post! My sister recently returned from having volunteered in Phnom Penh for 3 months so she came back with wonderful accounts of all the hidden gems and secret attractions that locals so often miss. There’s more to every city than the main tourist attractions for those willing to look!
Jennifer Joslin says
Thanks, Meg! Glad to hear your sister had a great time here. Volunteering is what first brought me to Cambodia as well, and made me fall in love with the country. I would love to learn more about her experience volunteering here!

I do love a good food market, so I’ll definitely would want to visit that when I’m in Phnom Penh. Thanks for sharing your tips 🙂
Jennifer Joslin says
Oh you’ll love it here then. Phnom Penh has some gorgeous markets. Cheers for your comment 🙂

I haven’t traveled to that area yet but Cambodia is high on my list. Mostly everyone I know who has been there claims it is one of their favorite spots in the world and by looking at all the beauty, I can see why!
Jennifer Joslin says
I think you will love it! Cambodia is certainly one of my favorite places in the world. We like it so much that after traveling here for years Stevo and I finally decided to move here!
Brenda Tolentino says
We didn’t get a chance to visit Cambodia while we traveled S.E. Asia so this gives us more reason to visit S.E. Asia again. I love Cambodian food and the pictures of all that fresh delicious seafood being grilled has me drooling! Taking the off-the-beaten path is often one of the most rewarding travel experiences, thanks for the story!
Jennifer Joslin says
Thanks for your comment, Brenda 🙂 I hope you guys have a chance to come back here soon. Phnom Penh is changing rapidly, but it still retains its charming chaos, warm people and yes, great food!
Brianna Simmons says
It’s great discovering off the radar places from the well worn tourist trail. Congrats on getting published on Goats on the Road, I love their site!
Jennifer Joslin says
Thanks Brianna! The Goats are awesome, I love their site too! Cheers for the comment 🙂

Cool things to do there! I really like markets, mostly for people watching. Plus, markets are always great places for photography.
Jennifer Joslin says
Very true, Hugo! I find that Cambodian people are friendly and often welcome having their photo taken if you ask politely. In Khmer (Cambodian language) you can say “Som tot muoy?”, which means “One photo please?” and are almost never turned down.

Excellent pro-tips! I have only visited the ‘tourist’ spots like Tuol Sleng prison and the Killing Fields. We were in Phnom Penh during Khmer New Year so the city was very quiet, we even drove around on a scooter! Not something I would usually do in a busy Asian city;-)
But I would love to visit some of these off the beaten track places! Next time, there is always next time…
Jennifer Joslin says
Tuol Sleng and the killing fields are very important to visit in my opinion. It’s crucial to go to them to get a better understanding of what Cambodian people endured and how it still impacts the country today. It is eerie during big holidays here when locals go to their homes in the provinces and the city is calm and quiet! You are brave for riding a scooter here any time! I just stick to my bicycle, more my speed 🙂
