Though we’ve known each other for ten years and have been together for a long time, it’s still important to acknowledge milestones in our relationship and make it a point to celebrate.
It’s a way to mark our achievements as a couple. After all, being in a relationship isn’t always sunny skies and smooth sailing. We are always getting better at it though, and that’s part of the fun.
Reflecting back on all we’ve done over the past four years since we got back together feels exhausting. Stevo graduated from university. Jen had major jaw surgery. We moved to three different cities in China. We moved apartments four times. We had three different teaching jobs, and countless jobs on the side. We traveled to 15+ cities in China. We got engaged. We traveled to Thailand and Cambodia. We volunteered as teachers in Cambodia. We got married! We traveled to Malaysia and Singapore. Stevo continued his comedy career in Shanghai, and also performed in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Phnom Penh and Bangkok. We left our jobs in Shanghai and fled China in the middle of the night. We started this here blog. Right now we’re in the third of six months of travel with a very flexible itinerary and not a whole lot of money.
It’s been a wild four years to say the least, and we don’t see that changing any time soon!
This is the crazy lifestyle we’ve chosen. We love living abroad and all of the exciting, constant challenges that come along with it. The best part is getting to figure it all out together.
For our anniversary celebration of four years back together, we knew we wanted to do something a bit off the wall to reflect the nuttiness that is our lives. Eating tarantulas seemed to fit the bill.
If you ever find yourself in Phnom Penh, we would highly recommend Romdeng Restaurant. The restaurant is a part of Friends International, a social enterprise helping to build futures for marginalized children and youth, their families and communities in Southeast Asia and throughout the world. Plus they serve a mean plate of tarantula!
Haha! Well, we love to travel for our anniversaries and often do fun and adventurous things (swimming with Phytoplankton in Thailand, hiking mountains in Switerland, etc) buuuut I really can’t say I’d ever want to eat tarantula!
Im based in London have worked as a secretary for more than 10 years and have an HND in Business Studies but am tired of admin work and office politics and would like to do something more creative- change careers.. . I write in my spare time and have attended an advanced writing course for the past 3 years and am writing a novel. I would like to see if I could train to teach creative writing in further education colleges etc or and English /English literature. I would also be grateful if I could get any info on what qualifications you need to be able to teach English as a first language and Basic literacy skills and ESOL..
Happy Anniversary! Looks like you guys had tons of fun in Cambodia. Will keep your ideas for further celebrations.
Thanks Inma! Tarantulas are a great way to celebrate any occasion 😉
Wow you guys have certainly had an action packed 4 years – happy anniversary! Haha I’m not sure I personally would have been able to eat a tarantula, so I give you full props for having the courage to go with that 😀 Though supposedly it’s a delicacy of the region right?
Thanks Meg! I think it is a delicacy of sorts, but we don’t regularly see people snacking on tarantulas in Phnom Penh. However, crickets and balut are commonly seen 🙂 https://twocantravel.com/?s=balut
You guys get up to some fun stuff! I still can’t get over the dressing up in drag in Thailand!! Happy Anniversary
Thanks Karilyn! We try haha. We just tend to say ‘Yes’ to whatever comes our way. Turns out that’s often some pretty wacky stuff…https://twocantravel.com/patterns/
You guys are crazy and I love it . No way in heck would I be able to eat that!! You’d have to pay me A LOT of money. Lol
Honestly it tasted like fried chicken! You could totally do it 😀
Happy Anniversary! Sounds like a memorable way to celebrate! I’m sure you two will never forget this one.
Thanks Amanda! It was definitely one for the books. We’ve actually eaten tarantula a few more times since then when we’ve taken visiting friends to that restaurant. Have to admit, we like it!
You didn’t! Eating tarantulas- now that is the weirdest anniversary celebration I’ve heard of!
Gotta be weird sometimes haha. Or in our case most of the time :\
That is pretty adventurous! I’ve eaten grasshoppers and superworks…but tarantulas are a different level!
What are superworks!?
I’m not sure I could do it (eat tarantulas). I try to be adventurous with food while traveling but I can’t do bugs and spiders. Even looking at it makes me shiver.
Thinking about what you are eating is definitely the weirdest part. Really, if you didn’t know what it was you’d swear it was fried chicken!
I don’t think I would eat a tarantula! They seem pretty hairy. But good for you two, something you’ll always remember together.
Since they were cooked they weren’t hairy, or else I’m not sure I would have liked them either! Cheers for the comment 🙂
